6:50 AM, Friday 8/16- Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Monterey Car Week, it was supposed to be a more relaxed experience this year. No brand to be beholden to, no PR team hurrying me about, just friends, family and some great cars.
Pour one out for best laid plans.
Three days in and I’m losing my voice. My eyes are bloodshot, my feet have blisters and I don’t care to try and calculate how little sleep I’ve gotten, or how much alcohol I’ve consumed.
And yet, I’m having a great time. It’s a much different experience dropping in on the heavily curated brand experiences at my leisure rather than being given strict marching orders to attend this and write about that. The autonomy is refreshing and I imagine it’ll be a hard sell for me to do it any other way in the future.
Today I’m scheduled to drive an electric Maserati convertible, a Porsche 918 and a 911 Targa GTS. Might squeeze in some seat time on the Hypermotard 698 Mono that Ducati lent me as well. Less talking, less photo taking, more doing. I can catch some historic car racing at Laguna Seca in the afternoon too…if I feel like it.
I look forward to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance tomorrow and there will surely be some unexpected activities tonight. I’d also be just fine doing nothing but sitting on friend’s patio and listening to the waves hit the rocks far below.
The regularly scheduled newsletter will return next week with a proper recap of my overall experience here in Monterey.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend ya’ll!
